The Net Monkey

[This article has been retroactively posted from my Kuro5hin Diary.]

Mountain Dew is supposed to help keep me awake, but right now I am at work and would really like to take a nap. It also seems to be upsetting my stomach a lot lately.

Today is my last day at Cummins. This is something to be celebrated, for I no longer have sit here and be bored. Of course, I spent a lot of time on Kuro5hin, but even that gets a little tiresome, if you know what I mean. One can only take so much of A Proud American and Filthy Socialist Hippy, while lustfully awaiting new diary entries from Mohammed Niyal Sayeed and egg_troll. It’s like torture, man.

Even though I restart my old/new job on Monday, I already did some work for them earlier this week. The dude who replaced me (and who left the company last week) installed a new NIC on the PIX firewall and was completely unable to get the other NIC’s to talk to it. I figured it out after a couple hours — eventually it all just made sense after reading my PIX book a little. Showed him up, which, of course, I gloated about via e-mail to him shortly thereafter.

All I can really say, to be honest, people, is that Cisco PIX firewalls suck. I really hate them so much. The problem isn’t necessarily their performance or their functionality because they do the job they’re intended to do; however, they are a fucking bitch to configure and very easy to accidentally take offline. So, of course, I have to make major changes to the firewall via a serial console at the colocation center, which is loud and requires me to bring my own chair just to sit down. Maybe I can talk the boss into getting a phone line installed with a modem that’ll give me remote serial access? Hmm! I will have to consider it.

Anyway, I am so eager to get back to doing some real work. The network at the old/new office is in a state of disarray and needs some very hard spankings followed by some apologetic tender loving care. I’ve got servers to update, software to patch, hardware to buy, and lots of other fun responsibilities. Oh, and I also need to take phone calls and do all that lovely technical support bullshit, but I’m going to be hiring an assistant here soon who will do my bidding.

Anyway, I’ve spent enough time rambling. Not sure how much time I’ll be able to spend on Kuro5hin once I’m back at the old/new place.

Bye, and stuff.
