Meaningful Polling

It’s official! The Klingons are backing Senator John Kerry for President, with Satan coming in second.

All of this polling is starting to become obnoxious. It really comes down to the fact that no one really knows exactly how people are going to vote in a month from now. One thing is probably certain: it will be a close election.

Boycott for Equality

If you’re gay and read anything gay-related (beside porn) on the Internet, you are probably aware of the Boycott for Equality.

The gist is that, if you believe in legalizing gay marriage, you call in sick to work, withdraw funds from your bank, etc.

Being that I have a cup half empty attitude at the moment, I believe organizers are diluting themselves in to thinking that this will have any kind of measurable impact on the economy. Gays are not as unified, politically, as people think, and the number of participants in this boycott will likely be small and insignificant.

Even if the impact were measurable, I fail to see exactly how this will change minds. How will this boycott change the attitudes of those who sincerely believe we are a threat to their way of life? That is not something you can accomplish, in my opinion, with a boycott. It does not remove the fear people have towards our community.

I must be honest with you. Deep down inside, I really wish something like this could work. Ever since the backlash towards gay marriage began last year, and for the first time in my life, I’ve actually felt oppressed.

Do you know the best way to change minds? It is being out of the closet. It really is very simple, actually, but that is a diatribe for another day. Right now, I need to get some work done.
