Seven Years

October 3, 2006 | In: Personal

On Sunday, October 3, 1999, I moved back home to Indianapolis, which, if you pay any attention to the calendar, was exactly seven years ago today.

Prior to moving back home, I ended a nearly four year relationship with my first boyfriend, Rob. We had just moved to Memphis a mere two months before we broke up, having barely settled in our new home in an odd city.

I arrived in Indianapolis on a Sunday in a rental truck, started my new job on Monday, and that night I bought my first car with a $500 down payment loaned from my parents. (I only replaced that vehicle this past December due to a rather unfortunate event.)

So, what’s happened in the last seven years?

  • I’ve lived in a total of six places: my parents house, a few apartments, and my own condo.
  • I’ve worked for a total of four employers, but two of them were repeats. I’ve been at my current job since January 2005.
  • I once planned to live in New York City.
  • I had a few serious and somewhat-serious relationships.
  • I became a homeowner in February 2004.
  • I came down with appendicitis and subsequently had my appendix removed earlier this year.
  • I’ve discovered my favorite cocktails and other alcoholic beverages.
  • I opened my mind to all kinds of food.
  • I’ve managed to travel a lot, too.

It’s a bit fun to earmark this kind of occassion because it gives me the opportunity to reflect on what has happened in my life for the past seven years. I think it’s important.

Honestly, I can’t believe how much time has truly passed; seems like yesterday. Seriously. I was 22 years old when I came back to Indy, and soon I’ll be turning 30.

Can I say that back in 1999 I am where I expected to be in 2006? Hardly! I don’t think I planned that far ahead, to tell you the truth.

So … what about you?

Well, I read your blog every once and a while and kudos to you for making some changes in your life. Yeah, things are never pan out the way they are written down in your mind and if they were life would be boring.

Hope things keep going your way.

Wow, I can remember you moving back from Memphis. I really didn’t realize it’s been that long.

Back in 1999 I was in England with my BF at the time—Neil. I was going to college in central London each day and tackling rising issues with my BF & trying to just enjoy the fact I was actually living in another country.

Since then, I’ve had 4 professional and 2 full time freelance gigs in communication arts.

I’ve had 1 not-so serious relationship & a few more that never seemed to get started. I’ve moved from Cincinnati to Columbus to Dayton for a job stayed for a year then back to Columbus (where I remain to this day).

I’ve sorted throught the extreme issues in my head from my past relationship. I’ve been hurt, been happy, been in love, been poor, been humble and managed to pick myself up and trudge on.

I finally got rid of my 1995 ford escort and bought a new ride in 2004. I’ve lived in a total of 6 different places; England, Cincinnati, Columbus with my follks, Dayton, Columbus with my folks again & Columbus.

I also became a godfather & uncle and am trying to deal with the fact I’m 31 now.

It is truly amazing how much changes in that amount of time… I feel like I’ve been through the thickness of my life and have a good grasp on things now. My 30s will not be my 20s.

Well, I never thought I’d be living in Chicago and working at the company that you’re at! Minneapolis is the only other place I’ve lived up until now. I also thought I’d be working at my last job for another ten years. Five years and ten months was as far as I got.

Oddly enough, you moved back to Indy the same year as I was ending my relationship with Bryan. Jason and I were still touch-and-go for the most part. I’d moved into Adam’s from Bryan’s, then in with Jason at Woodruff Place, then to Dequincy, then to your place, and finally here (Park Ave). It was also the year I left IU School of Medicine and went to work for PLI (where Jason works) after temping a few months and having the first new car I ever bought repossessed (a jade 3-door Saturn SC-2). After the Saturn came the Audi and now back in another Saturn (I just love their cars). I’ve had two plays produced since then (”Savant” at the Phoenix and “Catch” at Theatre on the Square and also in Sacramento, CA… which was my first trip ever to CA). I went thru recovery after two DUIs in less than two years and that’s going okay. Jason and I had two minor break-ups… one because I was seeing someone (Terry) and one because he was seeing someone (Kent). I’m FINALLY working in theatre full-time having recently been promoted from Literary Manager to Marketing Director at the Phoenix (my “home” theatre) where I’ve acted in a number of shows these past seven years and directed two critically acclaimed show: “Hedwig & the Angry Inch” at the Phoenix - picked Best of the Year by both NUVO and The Star, and “Equus” at TOTS, which garnered them a $30,000 gift from the Ruth Lilly Foundation. I also got my first grant - an IAC Individual Artists Grant ($1000) and was in a fairly bad accident while driving riding with a friend from the 501 to a bear event (we were t-boned by a drunk/drugged up uninsursed driver at 16th and College).

But, one of the high-lights of that time period was meeting you and making a new friend whom I love dearly. So… that’s my 7 year update.
